A brilliant novel, set in Denmark in the 1760s, vividly recreates the era of Danish history when Johann Friedrich Struensee, a German doctor from Altona, student of Diderot and Voltaire, and court physician to King Christian, introduced many reforms, including freedom of the press and better treatment of the peasantry, but whose inability to select the right enemies at court led to his torture and execution.
