This frank account takes the reader on a journey through the cultural upheavals of the 1960s, the author's relationship with two of America's leading Zen masters, and his struggle to create for himself an authentically American Buddhism.<BR> Eric Storlie's story begins in the hippie culture of Berkeley, California, where he and a group of friends first tried Zen meditation during LSD trips. When their experiments at quick enlightenment failed, Storlie retreated to the Colorado wilderness for what was to become one of the first experiences of wild nature that would become the touchstones of his life, putting its sometimes confusing events into their proper perspective: in the wilderness he understood the importance of meditation practice. He consequently became a student of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi in San Francisco and, after Suzuki's death in 1973, of Dainin Katagiri Roshi, with whom studied several years in the early days of the Minnesota Zen Center in Minneapolis. Storlie's intimate portraits of his two renowned teachers, combined with his compelling, unstinting account of thirty years on the Dharma trail, provide an eminently readable account of one man's search for meaning in modern America.
