The anti-Catholic riots of 1780 in London provide the setting for this historical novel at the heart of which is the forbidden love between Emma, a Catholic, and Edward, a Protestant, and the adventures of Barnaby Rudge, one of the leaders of the uprising, whose fate is linked to a mysterious murder.
